High Performance Astronomical Computing

Supercomputer (Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile)

The key aim of the supercomputer for astrophysical calculations based in Astro-Engineering Center UC (AIUC), is to develop cosmological simulations and to process data, coming from various astronomical centers. These data analysis will have several applications such: the study of formation structures like galaxies, clusters and stars.

Thus, the capacity of this cluster, which is part of AIUC computer lab, will not only allow to simulate galaxy surveys such the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), but also to analyze the future date of LSST telescope. This process is achieved regards the universes simulation (with large amounts of matter and dark energy with baryonic material), that -as time passes- is shaping galaxies and their evolution. These can be compared with the hundreds of millions of galaxies we know today.
